Scholarship Description: The Center for Afroamerican and African Studies (CAAS) at the University of Michigan invites applications for the Du Bois-Mandela-Rodney Post-doctoral Fellowship Program from scholars working on Africa or the African diaspora. Consideration will be given to all disciplines including the humanities, social sciences and in some cases law, business, urban planning and other professional schools. Scholars from or who study the Gullah speaking Sea islands, Cape Verde islands, the Anglophone Caribbean, the Canary Islands, and Madagascar and/or other less studied areas are especially encouraged to apply. This is a residential fellowship for the academic year. The fellowships package is worth $45,000 plus health insurance coverage. Included in the package is a stipend of $42,000. Health insurance, plus $1,000 for research and up to $2,000 for travel expenses are also included. Successful candidates can expect to maintain affiliations with CAAS as well as departments and research institutes that relate to their projects. Fellows will be expected to conduct a CAAS work-in-progress seminar on their research during one of the semesters in residence.

Eligibility:-The applicant should hold a Cand Scient/MSc or equivalent in biology and have considerable experiences with programming/scripting in JAVA, Python/Perl, C++ and HTML, as well as bioinformatics programming for both high performance computing and PCs.
-In addition, the position requires strong background in molecular biology, cell biology and experience with RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis and characterization of proteins.
-Furthermore, the candidate should have some experience with cell culturing, preferably growing of heterotrophic unicellular eukaryotes. The applicant must have serious research interests in microbial evolution. -In addition, because this research project is a collaboration with Spanish research groups, it is advantageous to speak Spanish

Scholarship Description: A 3-year PhD position (stipendiat, SKO 1017) in microbial evolutionary biology is available at the Department of Biology. The PhD candidate will be part of a strategic programme in Microbial Evolution (MERG) at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural sciences, but will also collaborate with other research groups at the University of Oslo and University of Barcelona. Applications and inquiries are invited from qualified, motivated and enthusiastic students wishing to pursue a PhD-degree in microbial evolution, with particular emphasis on evolution of regulatory RNA molecules among single celled eukaryotes. A major goal for the research is to understand the diversity of such regulatory elements among the Choanozoa and relate these molecules to the evolutionary transition from unicellular eukaryotes to multicellular animals. The project will be done with bioinformatics and RNA sequencing approaches.
