Postdoctoral Fellowship Study programme in History for UK Citizens

Scholarship Description: The Past and Present Society and the Institute of Historical Research will offer up to two one?year postdoctoral Research Fellowships in History for the session 2011–12, tenable at the Institute. The Fellowship stipend will be based on salary scales for the coming year. As a guideline it was worth £19,500 during the 2010–11 academic year. It will be payable in four instalments through the Institute.
Contributions to USS or other superannuation schemes on a similar scale will be made when this is requested and an arrangement can be agreed.The Fellowship will be awarded to a graduate who expects to have submitted his/her doctoral thesis in history (broadly defined) by 1 October 2011. It is a strict condition of the Fellowship that the thesis should have been submitted by that date. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate a broad interest in processes of social, economic, political and cultural change, as manifested in their particular field of study.


A condition of the award is that the Fellow should undertake further historical research and writing. The Fellow will be encouraged to submit his/her articles or books to the Editors of past and Present for consideration. He/she will not be required to be resident in London, but should participate in the activities of the Institute, by regular attendance at and presentation of papers to appropriate seminars and by giving information and help to fellow scholars working in the same field. At the discretion of the Director of the Institute, the Fellow may be given leave of absence from the Institute for a limited period for the purposes of his/her research, and to engage in teaching or other paid work for up to six hours a week (note however that some categories of non-national may need to obtain a work permit in order to undertake this).

Relevant experience in applied health research is essential, and individuals with a relevant clinical background may be able to combine this post with clinical duties in a leading emergency department.

The Role: The successful applicant will conduct research on a project that combines UQ expertise in food / nutrition with environmental expertise in fisheries sustainability. The title of the project is “Reconciling Dietary Guidance to Increase Fish Consumption with the Sustainability of Global Seafood Production”. Principal Investigators are: As/Prof Geoff Marks (UQ School of Population Health); Dr Anthony J. Richardson (Centre for Applications in Natural Resource Mathematics, School of Mathematics and Physics / CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research); Dr John Kirkwood (UQ School of Geography, Planning & Environmental Management / Agri-Science Queensland); and Prof Peter Mumby (UQ School of Biological Sciences).

The project is highly multi-disciplinary and addresses several key questions concerning the provision of adequate nutrition from a resource that is threatened by over-exploitation and climate change. Moreover, the project will make specific, clear recommendations on environmentally sustainable levels of fish consumption and types of fish to consume that meet nutritional demands, given the sustainability of different fisheries and the carbon footprint associated with Australia’s fish food requirements.

We welcome applications from a broad range of disciplines.
The Person: The successful appointee will contribute to evidence-based, progressive solutions to this rapidly emerging food security issue. You will need good quantitative skills, including expertise in collating, managing and evaluating diverse types of data. Applicants must possess the appropriate qualifications (PhD level or equivalent), have an excellent research record, plus enthusiasm to investigate this set of complex, interconnected issues in innovative ways.
