Scholarship Description: Academic Year and summer fellowships for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language and area studies. The Asia Institute administers Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship program for East Asia at UCLA, supporting graduate and undergraduate training in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language and related area studies.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. FLAS Fellowships are provided by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education Title VI program. The purpose of the program is to enrich the nation’s pool of area and international specialists. Applicants should be planning to use their training to teach, to serve in government or international agencies, or to engage in other work that advances American understanding of other countries.New and continuing UCLA graduate students in all disciplines may apply for the Academic Year and/or the Summer FLAS awards. Undergraduate students who have completed at least 8 upper division units in East Asian area studies courses and who will be studying the target language at the 3rd year or above are eligible for summer and academic-year FLAS awards.

Applications are invited from candidates in the following subject areas: English Language and Literature, Modern and Medieval History, Modern European Languages and Literature, East Asian Languages and Literature, and Philosophy. The appointment will not be renewable. The Fellowship is open to graduates of any University of postdoctoral or equivalent standing, who are already engaged in independent research. Eligible candidates should normally have submitted their doctoral thesis and have fewer than five years of post-doctoral research experience by the closing date. They should normally not have previously held a Junior Research Fellowship in the Universities of Oxford or Cambridge. The Fellowship is open to men and women; Hertford College is an equal opportunities employer.
Candidates placed on the long-list should expect to be notified in the week beginning 29th November 2010 and will be invited to submit written work. It is intended to interview short-listed candidates in the week beginning 17th January 2011.

Job Description: The Image Group at the Department of Computer Science (DIKU), University of Copenhagen, Denmark, seeks a postdoctoral researcher on the project “Human Motion”.
The group is developing a low cost marker-less vision-based system for 3 dimensional human motion capture with applications in biomechanical measurements and physiotherapeutic rehabilitation. The research group has already developed a functioning tracking system and the postdoctoral candidate will, in collaboration with other members of the group, assist in further development. Specifically, the postdoctoral researcher will work with initialization and improvements of the visual observation system as well as develop methods for analysis and comparison of human motion.
The initial position is for one year but may be extended. The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations.
At the Department of Computer Science, 4 faculty members and 2 PhD are working within the project. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to perform research in close collaboration with these.
Qualifications
The successful applicant will have a background in computer vision, pattern recognition and machine learning, and previous work in tracking and motion analysis will be a benefit but not a requirement.
