Job Description: The Image Group at the Department of Computer Science (DIKU), University of Copenhagen, Denmark, seeks a postdoctoral researcher on the project “Human Motion”.


The group is developing a low cost marker-less vision-based system for 3 dimensional human motion capture with applications in biomechanical measurements and physiotherapeutic rehabilitation. The research group has already developed a functioning tracking system and the postdoctoral candidate will, in collaboration with other members of the group, assist in further development. Specifically, the postdoctoral researcher will work with initialization and improvements of the visual observation system as well as develop methods for analysis and comparison of human motion.

The initial position is for one year but may be extended. The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations.

At the Department of Computer Science, 4 faculty members and 2 PhD are working within the project. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to perform research in close collaboration with these.

Qualifications
The successful applicant will have a background in computer vision, pattern recognition and machine learning, and previous work in tracking and motion analysis will be a benefit but not a requirement.

Fellowship Information: The Charles A. King Trust Postdoctoral Fellowships Program supports clinical or health

services research scientists in the early to mid stages of their research careers and basic scientists in the later stages of their postdoctoral research training. The primary goal of the Program is to prepare postdoctoral fellows for academic careers as successful independent investigators. Although the majority of funding comes from the Charles A. King Trust, other donors and private foundations also contribute to this Program.



Eligibility Requirements
1. Applicants must be working in an academic or medical research institution in the state of
Massachusetts and have the required minimum/maximum years of experience.
2. Applicants must hold a fellowship position under the supervision of a faculty member.
3. Mentors must confirm that degrees obtained outside the United States are equivalent to the M.D., D.M.D., PhD

other doctoral degree.
4. United States citizenship is not required; visa documentation is not required.
5. Only one applicant per Mentor may apply per application cycle; there are no institutional limitations on the number of

Planning and Organising
The post-holder will plan and manage their own programme of research activity on an ongoing basis, to ensure that the research programme is conducted in accordance with the research timetable and specified deliverables. Assist more junior members of the research team in planning and scheduling of their workload.

Problem Solving
The post holder is expected to resolve most problems using accumulated experience, with only the most serious non-standard issues reported to the line manager for assistance. To use creativity and initiative to identify areas for research, develop new research methods, diversify the research parameters. Use initiative to analyse and interpret research data, and draw conclusions from it. Use initiative to help other researchers in the team to resolve project problems and develop new techniques and methods, as appropriate.

Decision Making
Taken independently: Organise own workload according to priority and adapt as necessary, setting of short-term time-lines, design experimental set-up to address specific research aims.

In collaboration with others: Problem solving and data interpretation, experimental design and discussion of short-term research aims and potential new research strategies.

Job Description: The Managers of the Herchel Smith Postdoctoral Research Fellowships Fund invite applications within the fields of Biological Sciences, Climate Research, Materials for Sustainable Energy and Pure Mathematics.



All Fellowships are to be held at the University of Cambridge from 1 October 2011 or otherwise by negotiation. Fellowships are available for between two and three years and provide an opportunity for independent research, although the holders will usually work in close collaboration with established research groups.

In accordance with Dr Smith’s will, candidature is limited to candidates who have completed their PhD degree, or equivalent, within the last three years at any university but normally excluding Cambridge and Harvard.

The stipend will be on the University’s Postdoctoral Research Associate scale, currently between £27,319 to £35,646 per annum with £10,000 p.a. as research allowance.

Fellowships Job Description: “Anthropological universals – cultural differences” is an interdisciplinary project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Principal investigators are Prof. Dr. Christian Stetter (Institute for Language and Communication Studies, project leader), Prof. Dr. Walter Huber (Section Neurolinguistics at the Department of Neurology) and Prof. Dr. Martina Ziefle (Human Technology Centre, eHealth). We closely cooperate with Prof. Gert Westermann (Department of Psychology, Oxford Brookes University). The project compares the German writing system with Japanese Kanji as well as their cognitive processing. The aim of the project is to create an empirically appropriate connectionist cognitive model for single word recognition.

You should hold a PhD in the field of computer science, cognitive sciences or a closely related field and have experience in programming (C/C++/Matlab), preferably with connectionist networks. You should be highly motivated and eager to explore psycho-linguistic questions with computational modelling.

You will be responsible for programming and analysing an artificial neural network of single word recognition and lexical decision in Japanese (Kanji). You will cooperate closely with the researchers of the other sub-projects. Half of the time you will stay in Oxford (UK) at the lab of Gert Westermann.

Fellowships Job Description: Applications are invited for two postdoctoral research fellows to work on an AHRC funded research project on “Parliaments and Human Rights” with Murray Hunt, Legal Adviser to the Joint Committee on Human Rights of the UK Parliament. The aim of the research project is to evaluate (1) the effectiveness of legislative human rights review, by both the JCHR and Parliament generally during the 2005-10 Parliament; and (2) the judicial response to such legislative human rights review.


The research will involve the postholders developing a methodology for conducting this
evaluation, reviewing the academic literature on human rights (in both law and political
science), and searching and analyzing both parliamentary materials and court judgments.
Candidates should hold a doctorate in law, with particular expertise in human rights and
constitutional law. Knowledge of current debates about the respective roles of courts and
parliaments in protecting and promoting human rights is essential. Prior research experience
with parliamentary materials would be desirable.

Duties of the post
The key duties of the Research Fellows will be:
• Conducting a comprehensive and systematic literature review
• Developing and refining a methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of legislative
human rights review and the relationship between legislative and judicial human rights
review
• Research and qualitative analysis of:
? the use of JCHR reports in parliamentary debates 2005-10
? other references to human rights in parliamentary debates and committee reports
in the 2005-10 Parliament
? amendments made to Government Bills in response to JCHR reports and of
other Government responses to JCHR recommendations.
